Honoring a Fallen Hero on Prime-Time TV: Evocati PR Drives National Coverage for TAPS at the 2026 NFL Draft
How strategic planning and purpose-driven storytelling elevated a Gold Star family’s legacy to millions of football fans worldwide.
Introduction
The NFL Draft is a celebration of future possibilities, where young, elite athletes take the stage to realize their lifelong dreams. Yet, at the 90th Annual NFL Draft in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a different kind of hero took center stage.
Through a decade-long partnership with the NFL's Salute to Service initiative, the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) gave a Gold Star family the extraordinary opportunity to honor their fallen soldier by announcing the New York Giants' first-round draft pick.
Behind this powerful moment was a crafted strategic communications campaign led by Evocati PR. Our team took a deeply moving story of military sacrifice and sports fandom, translating it into a widespread media success that captured the hearts of sports fans and the military-connected community alike.

Involving PR from the Sidelines to Kickoff
A high-stakes campaign on a national stage requires proactive, values-based planning—not just throwing a Hail Mary to the media and hoping it connects. Too often, organizations wait until an agreement is finalized before bringing in communications professionals.
At Evocati PR, we advocate for a different approach. As our team previously shared in our article on maximizing cause-marketing partnerships, involving your PR firm from day one ensures that campaigns are built with newsworthiness, audience resonance, and cross-channel integration in mind.

For this high-profile activation, Evocati PR’s Tory Hyde spearheaded the strategic media relations strategy. The campaign required balancing the fast-paced nature of sports media with the reverence owed to a Gold Star family. Our playbook focused on:
Tailored Messaging: Aligning the TAPS mission of compassionate survivor care with the NFL’s Salute to Service milestones.
Targeted Media Outreach: Pitching specialized military-connected outlets, alongside local and mainstream sports journalists, to build early momentum.
Authentic Storytelling: Focusing the narrative on real people and genuine family history, avoiding the common pitfalls of stock corporate messaging. This adheres directly to our established best practices for marketing to the military-connected community, which emphasize cultural nuance and year-round authenticity.
A Legacy on the Clock: The Voelke Family Feature

The heartbeat of this entire campaign was the surviving family of U.S. Army Major Paul C. Voelke. A 1998 West Point graduate and highly decorated officer, Major Voelke served his country with distinction, receiving the Bronze Star Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and the Meritorious Service Medal. He was also a lifelong, die-hard New York Giants fan who even had a custom rug featuring the Giants logo made while deployed in Afghanistan.
Tragically, on June 22, 2012, Major Voelke died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom following an accident involving a mine-protected vehicle.
Through TAPS, the Voelke family found a community of support. Andrew and Benjamin both attended TAPS Good Grief Camps, connecting with other children navigating the heavy burden of military loss. Over the years, the family turned their grief into a legacy of service:
Traci Voelke serves as the Chief of Client Services for the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate at Fort Belvoir and acts as a dedicated advocate for military survivors, recently helping pass a Virginia constitutional amendment to expand support for Gold Star spouses.
Second Lieutenant Andrew Voelke chose to follow in his father's footsteps, graduating from ROTC and commissioning as an Army infantry officer last year.
Benjamin Voelke, now a college sophomore studying political science, recently completed an internship with the TAPS government and legislative affairs department.
On Draft night, Traci, Andrew, and Benjamin stepped onto the stage in Pittsburgh. Standing before thousands of cheering fans and millions watching live at home, they announced the Giants' fifth overall draft pick, turning a prime-time television moment into an unforgettable tribute to Major Voelke's memory.

Major Hits and National Media Results
The strategic media execution delivered massive public awareness for TAPS and its mission. By distributing compelling multimedia assets and managing exclusive pitches, Evocati PR secured a wave of high-impact media placements.
Major hits included a dedicated feature on Military.com, highlighting the family's journey and Major Voelke's enduring legacy. National sports and lifestyle outlets quickly picked up the narrative, with Athlon Sports breaking down the Giants' emotional tribute plan ahead of the opening round. Additionally, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) News published an in-depth guest feature celebrating the family's resiliency and the power of the TAPS network.

This campaign highlights our firm's core philosophy of "PR with a Purpose." Much like our past campaigns that earned hundreds of millions of media impressions for underserved and mission-driven clients, this effort effectively bridged the gap between national sports entertainment and purposeful community engagement.
