Without continued and increased research into the diverse veteran communities, we risk falling behind on our ability to support the approximately 200,000 service members who transition back to the civilian workforce each year.

Tragically, we as a nation know very little about veterans once they have returned to their civilian lives, apart from research on physical rehabilitation and mental health for wounded veterans. Hyperfocus on these specific veteran subgroups excludes research on most service members who transition. This results in gaps in our understanding of the struggles and successes they encounter during and after their transition to civilian life — research that can inform policy makers, stakeholders, employers, and supporters.

Dr. Cate highlights that despite recent withdrawals from military conflicts, Americans cannot let the wounds of war, visible or invisible, be forgotten or neglected.

Dr. Cate is attending Student Veterans of America's National Conference in Nashville, Tennessee from January 4 - 6, 2024. He’ll present his research findings and collaborate with employers, policymakers, and other researchers to promote and advocate for veteran studies research and improve the lives of all who have donned our nation's colors.
